What is “Seasons”
“Seasons” invited participates to collaborate and build a dynamic miniature world. The four seasons were compressed into one day at this event with a variety of season-based tasks for participants. Participants crafted flowers and watched them bloom in spring, then cut snowflakes and watched them fall in winter. Participants were also able to “enter” the miniature scene by punching out a gold or silver coin, putting it in the wishing well and wishing to be small. Then they walked behind the scene into a scaled up version of the miniature world. A monitor behind the trees in the background made it look like participants were in the scene.
“Seasons” at the Dunedin Fringe Festival, 2023
Seasons was a community art event held in the Otago Pioneer Women’s memorial building from the 17-19th March 2023 (10am-4pm). Seasons was part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival.
Check out the photos and videos below from the event.
Below is a time lapse showing the scene changing through the seasons.
My perspective on "Seasons”
I thought this project was particularly strong in these areas:
Fun and approachable activity
Encourages participation
Community creating art together
Play and performance
There were two stand-out features of this event:
The evolution of the scene over time.
The performance/immersion aspect. Participants entering the scene was surprising and delightful.
Developing and building “Seasons”
“Seasons” was developed around the idea of a scene changing over time. Being able to enter the scene was something I added to make the experience more immersive. The build was challenging, but fun. Here are a few photo highlights.
